2013 Halloweenathon

Okay, this weekend was a nice refreshing change as far as race promotion goes.  If you recall my comments about The Great Bacon Race (Fiasco), then Saturday’s Uberthons Halloweenathon goes to show that there are promoters out there who have things down solid.

Uberthons definitely promotes the “challenge yourself” side of running events.  There were not dozens of elite runners at Saturday’s event, but I don’t think that is what they target.  It’s more of a family style atmosphere.  That being said, there were some fast runners there.  With options of a 5K, 10K or 15K on tap, you had plenty to choose from

The course was at The Reserve Golf Course, just a quick 15 minute drive from home.  The 5K course was laid out on the golf cart paths, which meant multiple laps for anyone doing the 10 or 15K events.  Being laid out as it was it was nice with little rises, twisting turns and enough to keep you occupied.  It was not a boring 4-turn course.

As I was warming up, I saw a fox sprinting across the greens.  That was pretty cool,  plus some deer grazing in a field just outside of the course, it was a nice little reminder that while I live in Portland, there is wildlife still around.

Per usual, I won’t bore you with the race details, just a quick synopsis to say that I ran an okay race.  I’m not in the best shape right now and am just figuring out my routine after 5 months in Oregon now.  I ended up 3rd overall in the 10K and 1st in the 35-39 age group.  I can’t argue with that.  Not a PR, but a good solid effort.

Cool medals!
Cool medals!

As I am fond of saying, I’m at the fast end of the slow guys, so an age group win and 3rd overall was pretty decent.

The medals are HUGE and they glow in the dark.  I’ve always been a big fan of hardware over any sort of money for results.  It makes the I love Me Wall look good too.

Thanks for reading,
